Extension to Pay Nassau County School Taxes

05/08/20

Due to the current crisis, the State has approved extending the time for property owners to pay the second half of their 2019/2020 Nassau County school taxes until June 1, 2020 without penalty or interest. However, the second half of 2020 Nassau County general taxes are due by August 10, 2020 and we do not expect that date to change. We also do not anticipate the Suffolk County due dates to change. The second half of Suffolk Town taxes are due by May 31, 2020 and the Village taxes are due by June 30, 2020.

In terms of 2020/2021 tax rates, in October 2020, we will be receiving new tax rates for the first half of the 2020/2021 Nassau County school taxes. While we do not know what these tax rates will be, we expect that the tax rates will increase significantly due to several factors: The decrease in sales tax revenue will require the County to make up for the shortfall and  Unless the Federal government provides stimulus money to the States, there will be a dearth of school funding, which will inevitably cause an increase in taxes.

Similar to Nassau County, Suffolk Villages and Towns are anticipated to  increase taxes to cover Corona-related expenses.

Therefore, every property owner  in Nassau County and Suffolk County must be prepared to challenge their real estate assessment in order to reduce their tax liability as much as possible. You should be filing tax challenges annually and confirming that all available exemptions are being utilized. It is imperative that you adhere to all deadlines and requests for information, as any mishaps may create a significant financial burden.
